Mason's smash cake

We saved Mason's birthday cake for him so he could have fun with it and smash it! Preparing his first birthday was a lot of fun and I was so impatient to make him smash his cake and take pictures of him doing it...

I set up a little area ready for him to get dirty...

I attracted him by putting a few toys around which worked even though he wasn't really noticing what was going on around it...

After a little while I had to take the toys away because I felt it wasn't actually helping, but instead distracting him. I took him and sat him around his cake but he didn't seem to have any interest in it! So I tried to make him taste a little bit of it thinking that once he'd realize how sweet it is then he'll go crazy for it...

My husband tried to help by putting Mason's hand right into it and I think you can tell by looking at the expression on his face how much he liked it...

And then it was too much... he didn't like the feeling of it at all!  For some reason he was super scared of his birthday cake! It was a moment mixed with frustration and laughter at the same time - to watch him have this kind of reaction when he should be so happy and going crazy for it. It made me laugh but at the same time I was upset that he wasn't giving me the moment I was waiting for, for so long... He'll celebrate his first birthday only once!

So I tried again later that day, but we chose a different setup this time thinking that maybe if he's in his high chair he'd feel better...

This time he looked at the cake way more...

Kind of wanted to do something with it...

But he was too scared again! It didn't work at all and after that I thought there wouldn't be any point of continuing to try, so I just gave up! The funniest thing about this story is that a few days later when I finally decided to throw the cake away, I showed it to him and he put his hand right into it with the biggest smile on his face!
